Hyperbaric Oxygen (HBOT) and Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI)

Understanding Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI)

Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) occurs when an external force causes injury to the brain. This may result from accidents, falls, sports injuries, or other traumatic events. The effects of TBI can vary widely and may include changes to cognition, memory, mood, coordination, and daily functioning.

Recovery from TBI often involves ongoing medical oversight, rehabilitation, and long-term support. Alongside clinical care, some individuals explore wellbeing-focused approaches to support comfort, resilience, and personal recovery routines.

What is Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT)?

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy involves breathing high-concentration oxygen inside a pressurised chamber. Under increased atmospheric pressure, oxygen dissolves more readily into the bloodstream and body fluids, increasing overall systemic oxygen availability.

At OxyHealthCare®, HBOT sessions are provided as non-medical wellbeing sessions. They are not intended to diagnose, treat, or replace medical treatment or rehabilitation for traumatic brain injury.

Why Some People Explore HBOT After TBI

Scientific research continues to explore how oxygen availability interacts with brain metabolism and neural environments following injury. Some individuals choose to explore HBOT alongside their standard medical care because:

  • Oxygen plays an essential role in normal brain energy processes
  • Traumatic injury may affect blood flow and oxygen delivery to brain tissue
  • Research is examining how oxygen exposure may interact with inflammation and neural activity
  • HBOT is sometimes included in broader personal wellbeing or recovery routines

Important:
HBOT at OxyHealthCare® is not a medical treatment and must not replace neurological care, rehabilitation programmes, or specialist follow-up after TBI.

Research & Further Reading (Informational Only)

HBOT has been studied in relation to traumatic brain injury in a research setting. The following study is provided for educational purposes only:

HBOT and Traumatic Brain Injury
A systematic review published in Archives of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation examined HBOT exposure in individuals with TBI, exploring cognitive outcomes, neuroplasticity markers, and functional measures under controlled conditions.

What a Wellbeing Session at OxyHealthCare® Involves

During a session, clients relax in a comfortable hyperbaric chamber while breathing high-concentration oxygen in a calm, supervised environment.

  • Chamber pressures typically range from 1.5 to 2.0 ATA
  • Sessions are monitored for comfort and safety
  • Clients remain fully clothed

Sessions are designed for general wellbeing and personal recovery goals

Safety & Suitability

HBOT is considered safe for many people, but it is not suitable for everyone.

HBOT is contraindicated for:

  • Untreated pneumothorax (collapsed lung)

Caution may be required for individuals with:

  • Recent head injury or unstable neurological conditions
  • Certain respiratory, ear, or sinus conditions

Clients should consult their GP, neurologist, or healthcare professional before booking.

OxyHealthCare® does not provide medical clearance, neurological assessment, or rehabilitation advice.

Why Choose OxyHealthCare®?

  • Experienced, trained staff delivering wellbeing-focused sessions
  • Multiple clinic locations across the UK
  • Calm, professional environments suitable for recovery routines
  • Clear separation between wellbeing services and medical care
  • Transparent, compliant communication

We regularly welcome individuals who choose HBOT as part of their wider personal wellbeing and recovery routines.
